At Kun Hearing, Dr. Kun goes well beyond a standard pass/fail test, mapping how you hear across frequencies, how clearly you understand speech, and what it all means for your daily life.

History & ear examination
We start with your hearing concerns, how your hearing affects your work and daily life, your noise history, and any relevant medical background. Dr. Kun then examines your ear canals and eardrums using a video otoscope; you can see exactly what she sees.

Air, bone & speech testing
Air conduction testing measures how sound travels through all three parts of your ear: the outer, middle, and inner ear; bone conduction bypasses the outer and middle ears to assess your inner ear directly. The difference between the two helps determine what type of hearing loss you have. We follow with Speech Reception Threshold (SRT) and Word Recognition Score (WRS), measuring not just how soft sounds need to be, but how clearly you understand speech.

Speech-in-noise & loudness levels
QuickSIN measures how well you understand speech against background noise, which is the real-world challenge most people find hardest. Most Comfortable Level (MCL) and Uncomfortable Loudness Level (UCL) map the range between what's comfortable and what's too loud, essential information for any future hearing plan.

Advanced measures & results review
Depending on your history and earlier findings, Dr. Kun may add acoustic reflex thresholds, otoacoustic emissions (DPOAE), or high-frequency audiometry up to 16 kHz. Every finding is then explained in plain language, with time set aside to answer any questions before you leave.

Most people leave other clinics with a chart and very little else. At Kun Hearing, Dr. Kun explains every finding in plain language: what your audiogram shows, what it means for the listening situations you find most difficult, and what your options look like from here.

Whether you need a referral depends on how you're paying. Direct-pay and third-party patients do not need one and can book directly by calling (626) 820-9116 or using our contact form. Some insurance plans do require a referral, so if you're using insurance, check with your plan or ask us and we'll help you confirm. If your physician has already recommended testing, let us know and we'll send your results to their office.
Absolutely, we encourage it! The people around you often notice hearing difficulties before you do, and being in the room when results are shared makes the conversation more meaningful for everyone. There's plenty of room in the consultation area.
A hearing screening is a quick pass/fail check that only tells you whether further testing is needed. A comprehensive evaluation measures the type, degree, and configuration of any hearing loss, tests speech understanding in quiet and in noise, and gives you a full picture of your hearing health. That's what every hearing evaluation appointment at Kun Hearing includes.
Plan for about 60 minutes. That covers your intake conversation, all of the testing, and time at the end to go over your results with Dr. Kun. The conversation at the end is just as important as the testing itself, so we always leave room for it.
If hearing aids are recommended, Dr. Kun will walk you through the options that best fit your hearing loss, lifestyle, and preferences, all in the same appointment. If they're not warranted, she'll tell you that too. The goal of the evaluation is always clarity, not a predetermined outcome.
